Warner Home Entertainment plans to release a special Blu-ray version of its title Watchmen with Watchmen: The End is Nigh video-game bundled. The package is aimed exclusively at the owners of Sony PlayStation 3 video game console and may represent a test for the strategy of selling games with movies in the same package.

The Watchmen special edition package will include two Blu-ray discs, one of which will hold the video-game Watchmen: The End is Nigh (parts 1 and 2) from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and the other will feature the movie Watchmen: Director’s Cut. This new cut of the action-packed blockbuster includes an additional 25 minutes of footage not seen in theaters only available on Blu-ray and DVD. The price of the set is not yet determined, but it will be released sometime in late July, 2009.

Sony, one of the main backers of Blu-ray technology, said early this year that video games could be included onto the same medium as movies, providing both passive and interactive kinds of experience.

“We are actively pushing, and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc. There are a lot of developers who say, we have this game based on a movie, wouldn’t it be great to marry these concepts? We will definitely see this stuff this year,” said John Koller, director of hardware marketing for the PlayStation.

While there is plenty of obstacles on the way of “hybrid” Blu-ray discs, it looks like Warner decided to find out whether the market actually needs a movie and a video game in the same package.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh features a split screen co-op multiplayer option in addition to a single-player experience with an A.I. partner. According to Warner, staying true to the tone of the film on which it’s based, Watchmen: The End is Nigh features “stunning” graphics in moody settings mixed with brutal combat. Players can take on as many as twenty enemies at the same time in bloody, street-fighting gameplay action. The game contains nine chapters, built around events referenced in the film, allowing for hours of intense gameplay
