Lenovo Group, one of the world’s largest makers of personal computers, will release its first netbook early next year, said Qualcomm, a designer of chips and silicon solutions for various mobile devices. The smartbook will be based on Snapdragon platform and will be aimed at the very entry-level market segment.

Lenovo’s smartbook is slimmer than most smartphones and appeared not much larger than a hand, but sports a full-size screen and keyboard, reports Forbes. Qualcomm has demonstrated the smartbook at an event for financial analysts in New York. Actual specifications have not been disclosed; besides, battery life time of the smartbook has not been touched upon as well.

Lenovo is working hard to boost its PC market share these days. Smartbooks can hardly be called traditional personal computers: they are based on ARM processors and cannot run desktop version of Microsoft Windows, moreover, smartbooks are not intended for any serious office work and are generally designed only for surfing the Internet or using email.

Pricing of Lenovo’s smartbook is unclear.
