Psion PLC on Monday said that it had reached agreement with Intel Corp. and now the term “netbook” can be used by any company. As a result, Psion will not have any claims against netbook manufacturers as well as other parties using the term.

“Psion and Intel have settled the trade mark cancellation and infringement litigation brought in the Northern District of California relating to the “netbook’ trademark registration,” Psion said in a statement.

The litigation has been settled through an amicable agreement under which Psion will voluntarily withdraw all of its trademark registrations for “netbook”. Neither party accepted any liability. In light of this amicable agreement, Psion has agreed to waive all its rights against third parties in respect of past, current or future use of the “netbook” term.

Back in December ’08 Psion Teklogix, a maker of rugged mobile computers that once made consumer-oriented devices, reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to manufacturers of various small form-factor mobile computers asking them to stop using the term “netbook” as “netBook” is a registered trademark of Psion that was used to market ARM-based computers of sub-notebook size with limited functionality.
